CAROLINE SCHOLL ” The drawing of Athanor was inspired by the alchemist’s crucible. I like to imagine myself as an alchemist when I experiment with techniques and explore the law of material. Through my creations, I want to express the force of the natural elements and magnify its contrasts: the fragility of glass, the strength of metal… I’m also interested in creating paradox between the apparent simplicity of the shape and the sophistication of materials.”
« First I showed my drawings to the glassmaker who sketched the shape without a mould. Then I reshaped the profile in order to obtain a perfect match between the glass and the metal bracelet. I also adjusted the curve to make it more rounded. »
« The glassmaker blows and stretches the skin of the glass. A cloud of water condensation appears when the molten glass touches the mould covered with water. Therefore the glass does not adhere to the mould. The shape seems to be on an air cushion. »
« I am used to hot glass working, yet I have less experience in shape-forming techniques for metal. Therefore I have to deal with uncertainty from beginning to end. »
Finally, metal encounters glass. « The challenge here was to obtain a perfect bond between the glass and the metal. This was crucial. For the candle version of Athanor, we also had to test the potential effects of the combustion heat. We therefore anticipated metal expansion and glass temperature that needs to remain warm at every stage of the combustion. »
Caroline Scholl’s inspiration takes its origin in her childhood. Her first skills were passed down by her father, an ironworker and cutlery craftsman. She tries out technical gestures with him, learns about volum, density, gravity, measures different features, either solid or hollow…
The heat, the noise, the smell of the machines, and the magical transformation of the materials: her father’s workshop is her favourite playground. Later on she learns interior architecture and design at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Nancy. There, she falls in love with the aesthetic language of the decorative arts.
She then develops her own style, skills and savoir-faire in the prestigious French luxury Critallerie Lalique, where she is to head the creative department for eight years. Meanwhile, she keeps on drawing, inventing, imagining, and searching. One day, intuition transforms into certainty: Secret d’Alchimie was born. Two series of objects emerged, blending design and prestigious craftsmanship, all exclusively carried out in France.
Soon there will be other projects. Caroline follows her motto as always: finding the perfect balance to achieve the equation of emotion.
« My creations are, above all, human adventures with craftsmen and masters of art. I never dictate my drawing. It’s teamwork during which we explore, challenge technical constraints, and play with them together. I like to be in that process. We compare our ideas, searching for the perfect match, until we finally create the emotion I’m looking for. »
All the products designed by Caroline Scholl are made with exclusive French savoir-faire and craftsmanship. Glassblowers, goldsmiths, metal craftsmen, perfumers and candle-makers, are working in close collaboration with her. They share her passion for precious materials and for what she calls “precision of gesture”. There lies the key to the quality of these products and their authenticity.
